Tips for a Safe & Sensory-Friendly Memorial Day Parade

Making the Day Enjoyable for All Children with Sensory Sensitivities

Memorial Day parades are a cherished tradition across the country. Music, flags, and community spirit make these events meaningful. They provide a way to honor those who served. However, for children with sensory processing challenges, these lively events can be overstimulating — even overwhelming.

At The Speech Pathology Group & Rehab Services of CT, we believe all children deserve to experience the joy of community celebrations safely and comfortably. Here are six therapist-recommended tips to ensure your Memorial Day parade outing is sensory-friendly and enjoyable for everyone.

🎧 Bring Noise-Canceling Headphones

Parades are full of loud sounds, from sirens and drums to cheering crowds. Children with sound sensitivities may feel anxious or distressed in such an environment. A pair of noise-canceling headphones or ear defenders can help dampen the volume. This way, your child can stay regulated and calm.

🕶️ Pack Sunglasses or Hats

Bright sunshine, reflective surfaces, and flashing lights can also be visually overstimulating. Sunglasses, brimmed hats, or visors can reduce glare. These tools help create a more comfortable experience for your child.

⏰ Arrive Early for a Quiet Spot

Arriving early gives your family time to find a less crowded space. This allows you to settle in a spot that works best for your child. Avoiding the rush can significantly reduce stress. It also provides a sense of predictability and calm.

🧺 Create a Comfort Kit

Prepare a small bag filled with comforting items. This comfort kit could include snacks, a water bottle, favorite toys, fidget tools, noise-reducing gear, or even a weighted lap pad. Having these essentials on hand can make a significant difference in grounding and supporting your child during the parade.

🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️ Practice Parade Etiquette in Advance

Children thrive on routine and preparation. Use visuals, role-play, or social stories to explain what to expect. Discuss the crowd, the noise levels, and when to sit or stand during specific parts of the parade. Knowing what to expect reduces surprises and boosts your child's confidence.

💙 Know Your Exit Plan

It's beneficial to identify a quiet area nearby where your child can take breaks if necessary. Whether it's a parked car, a nearby park, or a shaded bench away from the crowd, knowing where to go for a quick sensory reset can be a lifesaver. Having a plan can ease anxiety for both child and caregiver.

Celebrating in a Way That Feels Right ❤️🤍💙

Memorial Day is a special time for honoring our heroes and spending quality moments together as a community. With a few thoughtful adjustments, you can help ensure that your child feels safe, supported, and included in the celebration.

The Role of Community Events

Community events like Memorial Day parades foster connections. They provide a wonderful opportunity for families to bond and celebrate together. However, ensuring fun for every child involves sensitivity to their needs.

Events structured well can engage all children, including those dealing with sensory sensitivities. We advocate for inclusive festivities where every child can participate joyfully.

From all of us at SPG & Rehab Services of CT, we wish you a peaceful, joyful, and sensory-friendly Memorial Day!
